if you can afford losing one wall in the bedroom, you might want to consider having a half height wall facing the stairwell to borrow daylight from the bedrooms. Of course, there are some home owner who needs a lot of storage and so every available wall space to them is precious and this may not be the best solution to have more daylight coming into the deep space of the maisonette.
